No Citizenship For Malaysians Who Have Given Up Citizenry - Abdullah

PUTRAJAYA, July 10 (Bernama) -- The Government will not reinstate the citizenship of Malaysians who have given up their citizenry of this country, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said today.

He said Malaysians, who have surrendered their citizenship, also cannot re-apply for citizenhood.

"All those who had opted to surrender their citizenship have officially wrote in to the authorities informing that they are giving up their citizenship of this country.

"(Acting on their letters), the Home Affairs Ministry has granted permission to the applicants to surrender their citizenship. Surely, there must be specific reasons for the ministry to approve their requests.

"But one thing I want to stress and explain is that Malaysians who have surrendered their citizenship to the government cannot have their citizenship status reinstated later, suddenly they want to become a Malaysian citizen again," he told reporters after attending the Internal Security Ministry's monthly assembly.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Tan Chai Ho said yesterday Malays accounted for 70 per cent of Malaysians who surrendered their citizenship in favour of life overseas.

Between 1996 and April this year, 106,000 Malaysians have given up their citizenship. Of these, 79,199 are Malays; 25,107 Chinese, 1,347 Indians and 350 other races.

Tan said more women than men were emigrating, with marriage being cited as the most common reason by the women.

Abdullah, who is also Internal Security Minister, said two police training centres, in addition to the one in Jalan Semarak, Kuala Lumpur, would be built in Langkawi and Bentong to step up enforcement and to fight rising crime.

"We will acquire a building in Langkawi so that the training centre can be operational soon," he added.

Pak Lah, what makes you think that those ex-Malaysian who had renounced their citizenship would re-apply to be Malaysian again? Not under your tenure, no way. And not until ALL the current Parliament Members, save some of the dedicated ones, have been removed and substituted by better candidates. They didn't renounce their citizenship out of a whim. They did it because there are a lot of things unpleasant going around in this country. And they have gave up on hoping for a change, because after all these years, NOTHING CHANGED AT ALL.

Sure, some of them wanted to return to Malaysia for whatever reasons. Perhaps the parents they left in Malaysia are sick, and need to be taken care of. Perhaps for work. Perhaps they suddenly realized that they couldn't cope up with the lifestyle overseas. But still, before we even consider why they wanted to comeback, let's analyze ourselves, and figure out why did they leaved in the first place.

I couldnt agree more.. Indeed, for everything that happened, there must be a reason.. We have to analyze their very reasons rather than blindly putting mere pressure upon their shoulders..

But to a certain extent.. I somewhat agree with the decision that there should be no re-instation of a long given-up citizenship.. Just a personal sentiment over loyalty to a country.. Standing against betrayal and treason of any sort..

After all.. If we truly are proud of being Malaysians, we wouldnt even think about giving up our citizenship in the first place.. Come shine or rain.. We should announce Malaysia us our beloved country regardless of the local situation.. Hubbul wathan minal Iman hehe.. If things are going on so badly in the country, we, the people, should make an effort to change the situation.. Not to leave the country for worse..

The last thing we want is for the people to label us as a betrayer to the society.. When you have no firm ground to stand on, people won't know to whom your loyalty lies with.. When you claim not to belong to a certain group, your very existence will be worthless to them.. In the end, if there's any crisis heppening within the group, you will be their only scapegoat..

Hate the country?? Make a change!! We people have power.. Use it, dont abuse it! ;)
